The TM-170 is currently operated by about 15 countries, with a total number of about 370 units.
High reliability and excellent cross-country ability make the TM-170 a highly customizable, versatile battlefield vehicle. It is an armored personnel carrier originally developed by Thyssen Henschel, later becoming part of the Rheinmetall Landsystem. The TM-170 was first announced in 1978 and went into production in 1979. It was originally designed primarily for use as an APC or an internal security vehicle, but could be adapted for many other roles.
The TM-170 is currently operated by about 15 countries, with a total number of about 370 units. The armored vehicle weighs between 8.8 and 11.9 tons, depending on configuration. It has a length of 6.14 m, a width of 2.47 m, and a height of 2.32 m. The crew of 2 includes the commander and driver, plus 10 additional personnel in the passenger compartment.

TM 170 is built on the chassis of a Mercedes-Benz UNIMOG 4 × 4 cross-country vehicle. It could be adapted for a wide range of other roles such as an ambulance, anti-tank vehicle, command post or reconnaissance vehicle.
The TM 170 is powered by a Daimler-Benz engine with 214 hp, coupled to a manual gearbox and the driver can select either 4 × 4 drive for cross-country use or 4 × 2 drive for roads, with the differential lock. All vehicles have run-flat tyres as standard. The exhaust outlet is on the left side of the hull. The TM 170 can reach a road speed of 100 km/h and has a range of 870 km.
The driver sits on the left with the commander to his right. There is a large windscreen which can be covered in action by two individually operated armoured shutters hinged at the bottom which fold forwards onto the front when not in use. The commander and driver each have three roof-mounted day periscopes for observation to the front and sides of the vehicle when the armoured windscreen shutters are raised. On each side is a window which is covered in action by a shutter hinged at the bottom, while over each of their positions is a single-piece hatch cover that opens to the rear of the vehicle.

Armament on the TM-170 is optional and it is capable of being equipped with a pintle- or ring-mounted 7.62 mm machine gun, a turret armed with twin 7.62 mm MGs, or a turret armed with a 20 mm cannon.
